The restoration of Mission Chapel in Worcester benefits from pro bono laser scans by Feldman

The building has a story to tell and Feldman conducted 3D Laser scans and a 3D model of the building to support its restoration with critical dimensions. Data from scans not only sped up the design process it is preserving a part of Worcester history. The chapel is the first Worcester building Feldman has scanned pro-bono, but the company plans to do more to help archive the key preservation projects.

Feldman completes digital scan to aid preservation of historic Mission Chapel in Worcester

The windows are boarded up or bricked over. Two decades worth of dust and grime obscures the cornice and the wooden spindles on the original staircase.

But with new laser technology, the architectural details hidden in the Mission Chapel are being revealed, catalogued, and marked for preservation, thanks to a pro-bono effort by a surveying firm to scan local historic properties.

“For historic preservation this is just great, because you can scan these things and see all the brick and mortar joints,” said Michael Feldman, president and CEO of Feldman Surveyors, a Roxbury-based firm that recently opened a second office, in Worcester. “This is the future of design.”

The Worcester Business Journal reports more details about Feldman opening a 2,000-square-foot Worcester office this spring.

Worcester Office

In an email announcing the new office, Feldman Surveyors said a Worcester location will give it proximity to its employees and projects, many of which are in Worcester including Worcester State College, College of the Holy Cross and the former Worcester County Courthouse slated for a $53-million redevelopment project.
